BIRDIES
FOR CHARITY
If you would
like to contribute to our effort one of our largest donation drives
evolves around the Birdies for Charity, a program operated by the
Heritage Classic Foundation. The Heritage Classic Foundation allows
local charities to collect pledges for the number of birdies (one
under par) which might be scored in the Verizon Heritage golf tournament
held each spring on Hilton Head Island. The local Rotary Club-Sunset
chapter then calculates your pledge amount with the number of birdies
that were scored in four days of the tournament and sends you a
bill stating the amount you owe after the golf tournament is over.

does it cost? Click here to

VOLUNTEER
TO BE A LOCAL HOST FAMILY
Thank you for
inquiring about volunteer possibilities. The application and admission
process to qualify for a Hilton Head Hero vacation is extensive
and thorough. As a part of the process referrals are received, applications
reviewed, medical information checked with the child's doctors and
release forms processed. This admission process ensures the families
arriving know about our program and what to expect on their vacation.
The Hero families are then assigned to a Host family whose most
important contributions are communicating with the family before
their arrival, welcoming them when they arrive and helping them
feel comfortable in our Heroes house in Sea Pines.
You are the
members of the Heroes team who get to meet the families and interact
with them on a personal basis. Social Care Workers and Doctors tell
us the anticipation of a planned vacation sometimes makes the treatment
schedule seem quicker for a Hero child.
The Hero child
will have completed a questionnaire before their arrival about their
favorite activities - this will be supplied to you to help you better
learn about the arriving child and family.
There is no
financial responsibility assigned to a volunteer Host family. All
meals and activities are provided through a gift certificate program.
These certificates are given to the family by you when they arrive.
Some families
choose to just spend their days being together, walking on the beach,
playing in the surf and riding bikes. Some families may be very
independent, others more dependent - it is up to you to determine
just how much interaction a family might need from you.
The Board of
Hilton Head Heroes appreciates the time and effort hosting a family
involves. It is the kind and giving spirit of our community that
has made our program such a success. As you will soon find out,
the children and their families are so appreciative of their time
away from medical intervention and treatment. It can be a very rewarding
experience and a cherished memory, one that encourages our Hosts
to volunteer year after year.
